- Description: A green demo run is not a live-trading pass. Check account mode, permissions, order rules, and state handling before risking capital.

**The OKX demo is green. You switch to live, and the first order refuses to leave. Worse, sometimes nothing obviously fails—the position is simply not what you expected.** Demo did not lie; it proved the rehearsal, not the stage. This article gives you four checks to separate what carries over from what must be verified again.

## A clean rehearsal is not an opening-night permit

A demo proves that this strategy version produced a signal and completed a simulated order flow in that test. Useful evidence. Narrow evidence.

Treating it as live approval is like passing a parking test and volunteering to drive blind through rush-hour rain. Confidence arrived before proof.

OKX uses separate demo credentials and an environment marker, while account modes change position and margin behavior. Move environments and yesterday's valid order may no longer fit.

## Live setups usually break at four doors

1. **Account mode:** The strategy and live account must agree on position and margin behavior.
2. **Permissions:** Read access is not trade access, and a trading bot rarely needs withdrawal rights.
3. **Order rules:** Quantity, precision, side, and order type must fit the live symbol.
4. **State handling:** Partial fills, failed cancels, and disconnects still need a final position.

The code may be unchanged. The room around it is not.

## Do not compare demo and live by profit first

Demo is good for workflow, order-state, and basic risk checks. Live markets add liquidity, queue position, and slippage. A beautiful demo curve is a successful rehearsal, not a signed fill.

Freeze the strategy and parameters. Change only the environment, start with a small risk budget, and verify orders and positions before scaling.

## Memory is a terrible migration log

Migration fails when nobody can reconstruct which strategy version, settings, market, and fee assumptions produced the result. EdgePilot Research can use the plugin to inspect supported public strategy evidence and run historical tests for supported packages, preserving the version and configuration for the next comparison.

One conversation keeps the strategy, settings, and test conditions together.

**The useful question is not “Did demo make money?” It is “Did every live prerequisite match?”** Rehearsal builds confidence. The checklist earns permission.

Break the task into verifiable steps instead of letting a brand ranking replace the evidence.

## Next step: Build a demo-to-live difference sheet

For the execution setup, see [EdgePilot Live’s operating guide](https://www.edgepilotai.io/en/live/?utm%5Fsource=edgepilot%5Fblog&utm%5Fmedium=article%5Fcta&utm%5Fcampaign=okx-demo-to-live&utm%5Fcontent=live%5Fsetup). Start by checking supported markets, permissions, and the selected mode before running a strategy.

A timeout is a different problem from a rejected order: read [when retrying can create a second position](https://blog.edgepilotai.io/binance-api-unknown-order/). If you are also changing venues, use [the exchange-fit checklist](https://blog.edgepilotai.io/best-exchange-for-quant-trading/) before copying the configuration.
